Tverskoy District, Moscow

Tverskoy District Тверской Район (or just ; Tverskoy Тверской ; pop. 75,955 in 2002 census) is a district around Tverskaya Street in Moscow. The Tverskoy District is one of Moscow's business districts. In the residential parts of Tverskoy District is quite calm, and it's one of the nicest areas for tourists and residents in Moscow.
About 300 years ago Tverskoy District was an area where rich Moscovitans liked to build their mansions. The mansions were very beautiful, boasting great architecture and beautiful interiors.
In the 20th century, during the communist reign, all the mansions were taken away from the nobles, and most of them were destructed and rebuilt in the Stalinist style. There was a need to larger the street, because the location was the best in Moscow. People say that the Soviet engineers putted all the buildings on steel balls and literally rolled them away, but there is no exact fact of how they did it.

Tverskaya Street is home to Moscow's entertainment, nightlife and shopping.
Tverskoy Boulevard is a part of the Boulevard Ring, a nice boulevard to walk, a major attraction for tourists.
Pushkin Square is one of Moscow's main traffic hubs, also a major commercial square. The square is home to a monument to Alexander Pushkin.
The Hermitage garden is the home to the New Opera house, and a refreshing green park in the busy Moscow centrum.
A very famous neighborhood in Tverskaya is Patriarshy Ponds; where Mikhail Bulgakov's novel Master and Margarita took place. It used to be a swamp and a gazing field for goats 200 years ago, but is now an expensive residential area.
Mayakovskaya square is a smaller variant of Pushkinskaya square, with many places to eat, cafes, some interesting contemporary art and photo galleries too.
Novoslobodskaya is a quiet residential area in the centrum. There are many supermarkets, small restaurants and shops.
Belorusskaya square is a one of the main transport hubs. It's home to the Belorusski railway station, some expensive hotels, and a lot of cafes.
The name is also given to a Metro station Tverskaya
