[edit] Characteristics

Most TV single dad shows begin with the premise that the mother is deceased, that the father is financially sound or even wealthy, and that a (typically foreign-born) domestic servant is part of the household.

Both dramas and comedies in this genre typically rely on the children attempting to find their single father a new wife or, conversely, try to convince the single father not to remarry.

[edit] History

The earliest identifiable TV single dad show was My Little Margie, which premiered on the American CBS Network in 1952.

The first known TV single father who was identified as divorced and not widowed was Ted Wass's character on the 1990 American NBC Network series Blossom.
