Turton Urban District
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Turton was an urban district in Lancashire, England from 1894 to 1974.
The district included in the south the Bradshaw area - the north was more rural, including the village of Turton Bottoms. In 1971 it had a population of around 21,000. It originally included just the civil parish of Turton: this was joined by Belmont and Edgworth in 1898. Censues from 1921 to 1961 gave the area of the district at a steady 17,344 acres (70kmĀ²) - the district had a low population density for an area with the status of urban district. [1]
It was split in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, with the southern part going to the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton in Greater Manchester, and the rest remaining in Lancashire as part of the borough of Blackburn. The southern part became an unparished area, with the northern part forming the successor parish of North Turton.
The district also has a well-established and successful high school and sixth form called Turton Media Arts College.
