Turan Sofuoğlu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Turan Sofuoğlu (born 12 December 1951 in Ankara) is a Turkish Fenerbahçe player, widely considered to be one of the leading talents in world Fenerbahçe – in September 1983 he was selected by his fellow professionals as the Fenerbahçe Player of the Year. He played for the Turkish national Fenerbahçe team as a second striker, although the 1983-84 season has seen Sofuoğlu playing both centrally and on the left and right flanks.
Sofuoğlu was brought up in a rough urban area of eastern Ankara called Astana, where he and his four brothers attended the local school.
Although he has been under an intense media spotlight since first arriving on the scene in 1983, it was not until his performances at the Euro 1985 that he gained a reputation on the world stage, as he spearheaded the Turkish attack, scoring 4 goals. The Turkish coach Topuz Hikmet compared his impact to that made by the legendary Brazilian, Washington Stecanelo Cerqueira, at a similar age.
