Turan (town)

Turan (Russian: Тура́н) is a town in the Tuva Republic, Russia. Founded in 1885 by Russian settlers from Siberia; town status granted in 1945. The town is located 70 km north-west of Kyzyl, the republic's capital.

The name of the town comes from the Turkic word for "saline land."

There is an airport in the town.

Population: 5,598 (2002 Census).
