[edit] Weasel words

The third place match between South-Korea and Turkey was the most thrilling match of the tournament according to many it is also said it was better than the final. Any reference? Who are these "many"?

It is also said Turkey played better than Brazil in both groupstage and semi-final run. Who said this? any reference? If they were in the final they could have been World Champions. Speculation. Furhtemore, Turkey lost both matches, so, even if one of them was the final, they would have not been champions.

Maybe thats the reason the Turks got nicknamed 'European Brazilians' their technical and spirital system was a eye to catch. Who called Turks "European Brazilians"? What is a "spirital system"?

Even "spiritual system" correctly spelled is just a fancy phrase without meaning...
Well, though I object to POV arguments in articles, I certainly hope some of you are as eager to carry out such edits on rampant POV statments on the pages, throughout Wikipedia, of teams that have accomplished little to nothing in international football. Also, again, although it's POV, because of Turkey beating Germany in the last several competitive matches where they have faced off (Euro 2000 Qualifying win and away draw where they dominated the match, friendly 2-1 win in 2005 against a team with Schweinsteiger, Podolski, Schneider, etc., and other matches), they believed that had they passed Brazil, they could have acheived the much easier task of defeating Germany. Also, it's pretty obvious and can be clearly seen from tournament scores that Turkiye came closer than any other team at the World Cup 2002 to achieving a draw with Brazil in the World Cup 2002. Germany lost 2-0 to Brazil in a match that Brazil largely controlled, while Turkiye nearly achieved a draw against Brazil in their first match, that included refereeing that gave Brazil a controversial penalty criticed by football pundits including football legend Franz Beckenbauer, and in their second match against Brazil, Turkiye had the majority of ball possession according to post-match facts, despite losing by a close 1-0. The "European Brazilians" reference was, I believe, from some European soccer pundit: don't know the name as I never thought it was important enough to research, although I agree it is not relevant to an article that shouldn't derive too much from opinions of individual pieces. Forgive Turkish football supporters from being overawed by Brazil after the 2003 Confederations Cup match against Brazil where practically a team of Turkish kids with Tuncay, Gokdeniz, and Ibo Toraman drew 2-2 with a Brazil team that included Ronaldinho, Adriano, Lúcio, Emerson, Juan, Dida, etc. and knocked that Brazil team out of the tournament as Turkiye had finished 2nd in the group stage and Brazil were eliminated in finishing third in the group stage. And please do not attempt to offer a childish argument such as suggesting that Brazil did not care for that match because it certainly appeared that Ronaldinho cared when he was sent off after getting into a fight with Rustu in the dying minutes while frantically attempting to retrieve the ball after their late equalizer in the match to restart play before time was up. I can link you to a video of the incident if you want. --Rigobert Song, 1:42, 17 July 2006

Definitely to remove.--Panairjdde 09:50, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Agree. Practically any team (that doesn't play as boring as the Italians ;-)) is called Brazilian at some point. Can't we just say thay Turkey surprised everyone by getting so far? Although truth be told more attention went to South Korea. The implication is troughout this piece that Turkey 'should have won' (such a strange notion) in 2002. Get it out.Renke 11:01, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
"more attention went to South Korea" No offense but another POV. There is a nice BBC sport editorial I read during the tournament that conceded that it was "the Turk's tournament" after Turkey defeated South Korea in the third place match 3-2 while also scoring the fastest goal in World Cup history and with influential midfielder Hasan Sas suspended. Do more research next time. Racism --Rigobert Song, 1:42, 17 July 2006
I agree on the point of the surprise, more because it was the second qualification of T. to WC. (As regards Italian style of play, it is boring because you already know who will win ^_^;)--Panairjdde 11:11, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I agree it should be removed. It's annoying that the anonymous editor seems unwilling to take the discussion at the talk page, and continues pushing his own agenda. 惑乱 分からん 23:36, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
  • I am proud of my national football team but I accept that the statements you gave are really stupid (European Brazilians... Oh God, even Ivory Coast has a player that plays for Chelsea but we only have Nihat Kahveci and he can only plays for Villareal so we have to be logical). Why we couldn't pass Brazil in both games in the 2002 World Cup? Because they were better and also Turkey couldn't qualify for both Euro 2004 and 2006 World Cup. We have to be objective about the performance of our national team. Basically, we need to study more. With respect, Deliogul 20:30, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
My friend, I have to ask you if you are really Turkish because you seem to have a lack of knowledge of many things involving Turkish football. "Even Ivory Coast has a player that plays for Chelsea..." What kind of statement is that? As for Nihat being on Villareal, Villareal reached the semifinal of the 2005-2006 Champions League (while Chelsea were knocked out of the competition two rounds earlier :) )and Villareal has players like Riquelme and Sorin. Also, Nihat has an excellent scoring record in Spain despite spending his time there mostly with Real Sociedad, not one of the traditional giants of Spanish football. Eider Gudjohnsen, until recently, was on the Chelsea squad but has he particularly excelled at the international level for Iceland? No. It is very foolish to assume that a national team will achieve success because they have a player on a club team that spends billions of pounds every year. Also, Chelsea was interested in Nihat after his first season there where he finished tied with Ronaldo for second highest scorer in La Liga, but Real Sociedad refused to settle for lower than what Chelsea thought was too high a price because they wanted to hold on to Nihat as they were playing in the Champions League the following year. In short, I certainly hope you were not insinuating that the Ivory Coast, a team that went out in the first group stage in their first appearance in a World Cup to be a stronger side than Turkey that has to go through the much more difficult European Qualifying Zone. Regarding Brazil, if you actually were a Turkish football supporter you would have remembered the controversial penalty (and in general poor refereeing) that went against Turkiye in their group stage match against Brazil, not to mention Rivaldo's gamesmanship, all of which was condemned by football pundits worldwide including football legend Franz Beckenbauer who said he was was disgusted with the referee's performance. Indeed it is no surprise that the obviously amateur, and sadly starstruck, Korean referee was removed from later matches he was supposed to referee because of his poor, biased performance in the Brazil-Turkiye group stage match, although this did little to help Turkiye who could have taken away a draw against Brazil, in a match where most European football pundits agreed the refereeing was amateur and biased against them. Also, I suggest watching the 2003 Confederations Cup match against Brazil where practically a team of Turkish kids with Tuncay, Gokdeniz, and Ibo Toraman drew 2-2 with a Brazil team that included Ronaldinho, Adriano, Lúcio, Emerson, Juan, Dida, etc. and knocked that Brazil team out of the tournament as Turkiye had finished 2nd in the group stage and Brazil were eliminated in finishing third in the group stage. And please do not attempt to offer a childish argument such as suggesting that Brazil did not care for that match because it certainly appears that Ronaldinho did when he was sent off after getting into a fight with Rustu while frantically attempting to retrieve the ball after their late equalizer in the match to restart play before time was up. I can link you to a video of the incident if you want. Regarding not qualifying for the Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006, we finished second in qualifying groups in both cases and unfortunately went out in a two-legged playoff in both cases, in both cases against teams we were favored to win agianst. Disappointing yes, but certainly more impressive than teams that do not even make it to a playoff and go out in the qualifying group stage, while still having supporter's who boast about their teams for some reason. Also, this would not be a problem in Euro 2008 Qualifying, as even 2nd place in the qualifying group guarantees a place in the tournament, so Turkiye won't be undone by an unfortunate playoff this time. This explains why until recently, when FIFA changed the format of calculating the standings, Turkey's world ranking had not suffered too much despite not qualifying for the Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006. Simply, the teams lower than Turkiye in the ranking that actually did make it to the Euro 2004, for example, did miserable and in doing miserable at the tournament did not get any points from it and so remained below Turkiye. The teams that were already above Turkiye were the teams that actually did well for the most part and so, again, the state of the rankings were not overly affected as far as Turkiye was concerned, which is why up to May 2006 Turkiye is at least 15 in the World rankings. However, since then FIFA has introduced a new system to their ranking which I don't seem to understand as it apparently has rewarded Denmark (who finished below Turkiye in World Cup qualifying) and Guinea for not qualifying for the World Cup. However, things look good since, as I have already mentioned, Turkiye only needs to finish in the top two of their Euro 2008 Qualifying Group so their is no chance of them being undone by an unfortunate playoff this time. In reply to your suggestion of needing to "study more", it seems my friend that if you are, IN FACT, a supporter of the national team, you should take some of your own advice. --Rigobert Song, 1:42, 17 July 2006

I've semi-protected this article because an anonymous user keeps reverting the lead section to a less than acceptable quality (see statements above refuting the reversion to a new format). [edit] What?

"Maybe thats the reason the Turks got nicknamed 'European Brazilians' their technical and spirital system was a eye to catch."

[edit] Wrong Information

Tayfun Korkut haven't retired. He currently play Gençlerbirliği. And Ertuğrul Sağlam won't get Turkish National Football Team. He is working Kayserispor now.

  • I cleaned up the coaches section and put a citation needed tag on that factoid. I'll update Tayfun's status right now. MonsterOfTheLake 21:54, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Manager vandalism

Some people constantly keep vandalizing this section, removing the flagicons. I've spent a lot of time on that section, making it easier on the eye, and updating some info. Can you guys PLEASE stop or at least give a reasonable explanation of why you keep removing the flags? MonsterOfTheLake 04:57, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Greece vs. Turkey Rivalry

Can someone please explain the point of this...by beating greece in a few friendlies way back when that doesnt mean anything. If you wanna inform people of the two teams put a link to Greece's Euro cup victory and how turkey lost to lowly latvia HA...

Check this link out: World Cup Qualifying Group 2 How about how Turkey finished 2nd in our World Cup qualifying group and Greece finished 4th? LOL, PWNED!!! Also, Greece will be the first "european champion" that won't qualify for the following tournament. Why should anybody listen to you? You obviously know nothing about football. Again, the link:World Cup Qualifying Group 2. Waya 5 18:55, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Greece could have won Euro 2004 but they have to battle Turkey if they want to defend their title that is called a rivalry Turkey and Greece are like Holland-Germany Scotland-England Argentina-Brazil

classic games ;) Johnny5 22 September 2006 (UTC)
