Tupinambarana

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tupinambarana is a river island in the Amazon and Uraría rivers in Amazonas, Brazil. It has an area of 11,850 km², making it one of the largest river islands in the world.

The island is largely forested, and is only accessible by river or by air. It has a small mountain range, and is home to the city of Parintins, known for the Parintins Folklore Festival. There are also remains of a village constructed in the 1930s by Japanese settlers hoping to cultivate jute.
