Tung Shan

Tung Shan (806-869) (Tozan Ryokai, Jap.) was an ancient Chinese Ch'an (Zen, Jap.) master whom is the credited founder of the Tsao-tung Cha'n lineage, also known as Soto Zen which was brought to Japan by Dogen Zenji. He is the author of the Verses of the Five Ranks and was known for his spontaneity. Tung Shan is the subject of Case 18 "Three Pounds of Flax" in the Mumonkan (a collection of koans) authored by Mumon Ekai in 1228.
