Tumakuru

Tumakuru (Kannada:ತುಮಕೂರು), formerly Tumkur [Latitude: 13 20' 32" Longitude : 77 06' 06"] is a city in Karnataka state of southern India. It is the headquarters of Tumkur District. Tumkur is about 70 km from Bangalore the Capital city of Karnataka State. Attractions include Sri Siddaganga Mutt, Sri Shivaganga hills and Basadi Hills. Tumkur has good education institutions in Technology, Medicine, Dental, Pharmacy and also Nursing. Near Tumkur is a small beautiful place of pilgrimage called 'Devarayanadurga' ;it is a hill station situated with dense forest, there you can see 'Sri Yoganarasimhaswamy' and 'Bhoga Narasimhaswamy' temples as well as 'Namada chilume' and 'Aadi shankara' temple You can reach here by two routes- Bangalore - Dobaspet-Urdigere-Devarayanadurga 65 KM Tumkur - Devarayanadurga - 16KM

Etymologically Tumkur is believed to have been mutated possibly from "Tumbe uuru" due to the abundance of Tumbe huuvu a kind of flower, or Tamate Uuru due to the folk musical percussion instrument Tamate , that might have been used most here.
The city has a station on the Southern railway, 43 m. N.W. from Bangalore. The area of the district is 4158 sq. m. It consists chiefly of elevated land intersected by river valleys. A range of hills rising to nearly 4000 feet crosses it from north to south, forming the waterparting between the systems of the Krishna and the Cauvery. The principal streams are the Jayamangala and the Shimsha. The mineral wealth of Tumkur is considerable; iron is obtained in large quantities from the hill-sides; and excellent building-stone is quarried. The slopes of the Devaray-durga hills, a tract of 18 sq. m., are clothed with forests, in which large game abounds, including tigers, leopards, bears and wild hog. The climate of Tumkur is equable and healthy; the annual rainfall averages 39 in.
The population in 1901 was 679,162, showing an increase of 17 % in the decade. The cultivated products consist chiefly of millets, rice, pulses and oil seeds. The chief industries are the making of coarse cotton cloths, woolen blankets, ropes, watches(Hindustan Machine Tools),. WIPRO,TVSE and Karmobile have their industries around the town. Its endeavours in education sector is disproportionally good, with many engineering colleges and a medical college. It is believed to have been founded by KANTE ARASU OF MYSORE ROYAL FAMILY.
On the occasion of "SUVARNA KARNATAKA" the TUMKUR city was named as "TUMAKOORU".Also 10 cities of Suvarna Karnataka were renamed from November first marking the Kannada Rajyotsava day.
The 10 cities are: Bengalooru (Bangalore), Mysooru (Mysore), Mangalooru (Mangalore), Chikmagalooru (Chikmagalur), Shivamogga (Shimoga), Belagaavi (Belgaum), Kalburgi (Gulbarga), Hubballi (Hubli), Hosapete (Hospet) and Tumakooru (Tumkur).
