Tumaco has a hot tropical climate. It is located close to the Pacific coast of Colombia. Tumaco's climate is similar to the hot tropical climate of the Atlantic (Caribbean) coast of Colombia.

Tumaco has beaches of very good quality and warm water, although Atlantic (Caribbean) coastal Colombia has somewhat warmer water and definitely better quality beaches than Tumaco. On Sundays the beaches are crowded mostly with locals enjoying the day there. There are local style music bands that play right at the beach sometimes on weekend nights. The styles of music played are typically Colombian, namely reggaeton, salsa, and other Latin sounds.

Tumaco has many black (African) and some indigenous (Indian) inhabitants, which is similar to the Atlantic coast of Colombia. This is to be contrasted with the high mountain parts of much of Colombia such as Bogota, which have predominantly white inhabitants and some indigenous (Indian) inhabitants but very few black (African) inhabitants.

Tumaco is accessible by once-a-day flights in each direction to Cali in the early morning, with convenient connections to Bogota. Round trip (return) airfare from Bogota is currently approximately Colombian Pesos 750,000 which converts to about US$300 or Euros 250. You can also reach Tumaco via bus along the highway from Pasto, the capital of Narino department (state). It is not recommendable for foreigners to use the bus to travel between Colombian cities for safety reasons. But domestic airline flights within Colombia are very safe for foreigners.
