Tsuruhashi Station

There are three train stations with the name, Tsuruhashi Station(鶴橋駅 Tsuruhashi-eki) in the Tsuruhashi district of Tennoji-ku, Osaka, Japan; Osaka Loop Line, the Kintetsu Osaka Line, the Kintetsu Nara Line, and the Osaka Municipal Subway Sennichimae Line.

While much of Japan is sanitized, the area directly surrounding Tsuruhashi station is reminisent of a bygone era. Stepping out of the station, you encounter smells unlike the rest of Japan. This area of Osaka is well-known for its yakiniku (Korean-style barbeque) restaurants and other Korean goods. Under the tracks, you will find a labyrinth of stalls selling everything from Korean wedding dresses, fruit and vegetables, to kimchi.

The Tsuruhashi and Ikuno-ku districts are also well-known for the large number of Korean-Japanese citizens (Zainichi Korean) living there. Many families from Korea have lived in the Tsuruhashi district for three generations or more. While some Koreans chose freely to emigrate many were forced to Japan and made to work in factories, in mines and as labourers, often under appalling conditions.
