Tryad (also t r y ^ d, t r y Δ d) is an Internet musical group that formed in January 2005 (not to be confused with an earlier band of the same name). They are among the first music groups to publish all their works under Creative Commons licenses, and are an example of remix culture.

Tryad's members were originally rjmarshall, vavrek, and John Holowach. arna, ema, Karen Rustad, Scott Waddell and hisboyelroy joined later. Steven J. Kukla contributed to recent songs on their sophomore album. Also note that the members are not all in one geographical area: vavrek, emma, and arna are in Seattle, Washington, USA; John Holowach and Scott Waddell are in separate cities in Ohio, USA; Karen Rustad is in California, USA; and rjmarshall is in Japan. Since all of the members have never met in one place, they create and share all of their music over the Internet.

According to a group press release, Holowach discovered a song that rjmarshall had posted under a Creative Commons license, remixed it, then posted it on his own website. vavrek subsequently found that song and added vocals, which led to the formation of the band.

Their first album, Public Domain, was released 3 August 2005. By their own account, the genre is industrial classical pop (though their CD Baby page description lists it as "trip-hop, alt. rock, classical instrumentation, and electronica"). While a CD can be purchased, it can be downloaded at several places, including their home website, tryad.org, and Jamendo (link). Many of the tracks on this album are a member's earlier work or include samples of other songs.

Tryad released their sophomore album Listen in September 2006 through sites like CDBaby, TheAudiobubble, and Amazon, amongst others. A music video was posted on YouTube to promote it.
