Prestige classes

In 3.5 edition Dungeons & Dragons the Truenamer is a kind of wizard that uses the magic of words.

According to the Tome of Magic they are a class based on the premise of a primordial language that truly describes the universe. The language is close to elvish in structure and vocabulary. The truenamer needs only a knowledge of the language to use the innate magic of the universe. They are not casting a spell so much as they are altering the description of the universe, therefore changing the structure of the universe itself (or perception thereof).

The class is the only caster class that is skill based. This has generated much controversy on the official message boards over whether or not the class is balanced (need link). The Difficulty Class (DC) of each spell rises based on a variety of factors, including:

  • Hit Dice of the target (x2)
  • Times the ability has been used per day
  • Whether or not the Truename of a creature is known

In most other aspects, Truenamers resemble Sorcerers

No currently published race has truenamer as a favored class.
