True Colors is an episode of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

[edit] Plot

Bowser plans a midnight attack on The Mushroom Kingdom but is easily thwarted by Mario and Luigi. Then back at the castle, Larry has a "devious and nasty plan that will divide and conquer". Bowser (who is tired from having to stay up late for said midnight attack) agrees, and they organize the Doomships at morning. Then the mini-ships pour red and blue paint all over the citizens, including Mario and Luigi, who are rendered blue and red, respectively. (Why nobody ends up purple is anybody's guess.)

The citizens are at first okay afterwards, but Larry and Ludwig then disguise themselves as Mushroom citizens and provoke the town into racial war. Even the Mario Bros. bicker with each other. (Princess Peach and Toad are the only exceptions since they weren't hit by the paint earlier.)

Trying to find a solution to the problem, the Mario Bros. trek into Bowser's Castle and start bickering about which path to take. They both finally find the right path (the path neither of them took) and end up finding out about the Koopalings' plans. They agree to a truce and return to the Mushroom Kingdom. Not far away, Bowser is armed with a pack of Sledge Bros., ready to attack. Everyone is ready to fight, but the Mario Bros. interrupt them, claiming that the Princess is in danger. Then they realize that she is okay, and Mario says "It shows your true colors." Everyone makes up, and the Koopalings' plan is ruined.

[edit] Trivia/Goofs

  • This episode is about racism, a topic not expected to be covered in a children's cartoon.
  • When the Koopas make their midnight attack, it still appears to be daytime.
  • When Larry says "Help, dad! We're in trouble!" through the wand, his mouth doesn't move.
  • The masks the Koopalings wear shouldn't move with their mouths, but it may be possible that they have a special mouthhole for them.
  • The red paint they spray looks more like pink.
  • When they pour the paint on Mario & Luigi, they are standing crouched on the sidewalk, but on Koopa's monitor, they are standing straight up on a yellow background. Additionally, when the Mario Bros. are hit by the paint, it knocks their hats off, but in the next shot, where we see them on a monitor on the Doomships, their hats are back on.
  • This is the second episode in the series in which Mario and Luigi fight, the first being Oh, Brother!.
  • When Luigi says he is going to take pipe number two, he sticks up three fingers instead of two.
  • When Kooky tries to wake up Koopa, Kooky's entire face is white!
  • In one shot where Cheatsy says "Oh yeah," Kooky's mouth is also moving!
  • When the blue baker speaks after Princess, the entire crowd of Mushroom people have black eyeballs!
  • When Kooky speaks after the Mario Bros. choose pipe number 3, his face is entirely white for the second time in this episode!
  • When Cheatsy says "To the blooming point," Kooky is shown and his mouth is moving when Cheatsy is the one talking!
  • When Koopa says "I hope we can get this conquering over," his mouth isn't moving!
  • When Cheatsy speaks through the wand after the mask fell off, his own wand is shown on the ground where Koopa is! When we see Koopa, it's his normal wand.
  • When you first see the Mushroom people, they look like they have been painted.
