Tromsøysund

Tromsøysund is a former municipality in Troms county, Norway.
It was created in 1837 as Tromsøe landdistrikt, adjacent to the city of Tromsøe. According to the 1835 census the municipality had a population of 4,286. In 1860 Balsfjord was split from Tromsøe landdistrikt to constitute a municipality of its own, leaving Tromsøe landdistrikt with 2,632 inhabitants.
In 1873 a part of Malangen municipality, which in 1871 had split from Balsfjord, was reunited with Tromsøysund. Parts of Tromsøysund with 110, 0, 512 and 1,583 inhabitants were moved to Tromsø in 1861, 1873, 1915 and 1955 respectively.
On 1 January 1964 the the rest of Tromsøysund was incorporated into Tromsø. Prior to the merger Tromsøysund had a population of 16,727, somewhat more than Tromsø.
