[edit] Chubby Chocobo

Thanks for the response about the Chocobo Racing section of my article. I hadn't played Chocobo Racing enough to know if there's any significance to the character, but what you've told me is enough. Thank you. --Frid 10:53, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image shuffling on 3-d world runner

The gamecover is duplicated already, and one should avoid screenshot galleries if possible, in order to keep the screenshots in terms of their article context (for proper fair use rationale). I am re-inseritng the screenshots back into article context, but for now I will not move thje gamecober from the infobox, although I object to its use liek that. This topic is currently beign debated on here.

YOu dont have to have context for youtr screenshot sits just reccomended. Theres many users who are strict about fair use (which screenshots are used under) and will remove them if they are in galleries, as there is no blatent context. But it in a short/stub article, its sometiems all you got and you ahve to put them into a gallery. --larsinio (poke)(prod) 20:23, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I didn't vandalize.

When I added the nintendo 64 part to the metal gear article, I wasn't vandalizing. A nintendo 64 version of metal gear really was planned, but was cancelled, too.

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Ogopogo examiner issue2(fall1992)page3.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that your image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. [edit] History emrger

I tagged Will (computer game) for speedy deletion because the history was not preserved. According to WP:CUTPASTE, pages should not be moved manually by cut and paste; they should instead be moved by using the "move" button, which preserves the history. I noticed that you removed the speedy tag, believing that it was going to be outright removed, but I just wanted to clairfy that. Hbdragon88 07:18, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] King's Knight article

I only just realized that my last edit reverted your own. However, I strongly believe it should stand as is. The difference between Square Co., Ltd. and Square Soft, Inc. (Square's North American subsidiary) is very much like the difference between distinguishing the publishers Square Co., Ltd. and Square Electronic Arts (for Square's PlayStation games released in North America). Furthermore, the article's introduction addresses the publishers, stating that the game was the first to be published by Square's newly formed North American subsidiary. --Tristam 05:09, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

It's still very confusing to have them listed as they are. By your logic, should we have Nintendo articles list both "Nintendo Japan" and "Nintendo USA" as publishers? The two are not different companies, it should just read "Square" for both IMO.
But btw, nice job on getting it to be a GA. I own the Famicom version, always nice to see articles for games you own be of good quality. --SeizureDog 05:28, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
I actually do support differentiating between "Nintendo of Japan" and "Nintendo of America." I think it is worthwhile; the NoA of yore imposed stringent censorship policies. So besides being factually correct, I think it is relevant. I kind of stick to editing Square game articles only though. Thanks for the congrats with regards to the GA, although I *really* need to clean that article up - it was my first one. My efforts with Chocobo Racing and 3-D WorldRunner are a lot better than King's Knight, and I was considering submitting them to GA (I think with some editing Chocobo Racing could even be FA, but maybe that's my optimism speaking). As I type I'm also overhauling the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest page, and I'm pretty close to being finished. I'm also about 70% done with the Square Co. page itself, and it's lookin' pretty hot right now (in preview only, of course :P). --Tristam 05:37, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Well maybe we should bring the issue up in the video game wikiproject then. And yeah, I'd say you're definately overly optimistic about Chocobo Racing, it doesn't stand a prayer of a chance as it is. Sourcing is going to kill you on that one. Only 4 websites and a lot of quotes from the game. Plus, it is rather listy, they always hate that. Besides, I think all FA quality video game articles kinda need to have a development section. Still, I'm sure you can work it up to GA status. --SeizureDog 06:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hey

Nice field map screenshot. Illustrates the "navigation" aspect a little better. Ryu Kaze 17:31, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that offer. That being the case, do you think you could maybe find us a better battle screenshot? While the one we have is valuable (represents basic battle and the summoning of a GF), it's not very exciting either (Elvoret's a very lame boss in my opinion). Do you think you could get us one that -- while including the GF summon meter -- also has a better boss picture? I think I'd be okay with even that one despite Elvoret's lameness if not for the fact that it's glitchy (look at his left arm). Thanks in advance. Ryu Kaze 17:42, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Hm... I think the sweetness of the X-ATMO92 outweighs the issue of its timer. I could always edit the timer out of the picture too, if need be. Ryu Kaze 18:07, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Holy crap, perfect. Well done. Ryu Kaze 19:28, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Off the wall

Nice job on the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest article and its compliment articles. I had been meaning to take action on it myself for quite some time, because I recently played through the game on emulator. I remember recognizing your user name as a character from a Final Fantasy game without even remembering it was Mystic Quest until I played it again. You seem to have an interest in the more obscure Square Co., Ltd. games, many of which I've never played or even heard of before Wikipedia. Keep up the good work! ~ Hibana 00:37, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Secondary sources

If you read Wikipedia:Reliable sources#Some definitions, it does state that "In general, Wikipedia articles should not depend on primary sources but rather on reliable secondary sources who have made careful use of the primary-source material." So, if you were to state an opinion rather than a fact when, say, you were talking about the greatest NES games of all time, and you added Super Mario Bros. 3 because Nintendo Power (a publisher based off the company that created the game) said so, it wouldn't be cosher.

But, it's hard to find good (reliable) printed material on video games that isn't a video game magazine, gaming website, or strategy guide. It's not impossible, like if you look at one of Ryu's links (not necessarily sources) for Final Fantasy X, there's a doctoral thesis based on meaning and emotion in the game. It may be more difficult for older games like Final Fantasy IV, but like they say finding good sources may require some effort. If you're still concerned, I'd bring it up on the main Project talkpage. I think it'll provide for some interesting commentary and help out all of us in the long run. ~ Hibana 16:28, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Demon of Laplace

No problem. To be totally honest, I actually put in a weak delete vote in the recent AfD concerning that page, since I hadn't heard of the game or Hummingbird Soft. After it ended with no consensus, I did some further research to try to improve the article somewhat, and realized that it was released on four platforms and had some notability by association of the developers and publishers. So, what is the deal with the camelcase, anyway? Is that how the company spelled their name? --SevereTireDamage 20:58, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Screenshots

I was actually going to ask how you go about getting those nice-looking screenshots, like the one for Final Fantasy IX.

69.69.147.215 03:00, 6 September 2006 (UTC)Chiizukun

Since you don't have a profile I can directly respond to, I'll simply reply on my own talk page. For those screenshots I use ePSXe, the most popular PlayStation emulator, to run one of the four Final Fantasy IX discs directly on my laptop (alternatively, you could download an ISO of Final Fantasy IX, the PS equivalent of a ROM). Then I simply press PrntScrn and viola - I can open up MS Paint or Photoshop, go to Edit > Paste and then save the screenshot as any filename. The difficulty comes in with configuring ePSXe - how nice your screenshots will turn out depends on how the graphical plugin of ePSXe is configured, and optimal settings can only be achieved with a high-end graphics card (which I actually don't have - I have a standard Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop on WinXP). I used to use P.E.Op.S. Soft Driver 1.15 as my graphical plugin, since my CPU can handle that easily. To take those pretty screenshots, though, I use Pete's D3D Driver 1.75 - it's the only nice graphical plugin that doesn't cause ePSXe to crash on my computer. From there I really had to customize the extra graphical plugin options. For example, I set texture quality to "Best colors, more RAM needed" and texture filtering to "6: Extended + smooth sprites." I also set Off-Screen drawing to "3: Enhanced - shows more stuff." Even after all of this, there were a few screw-ups. In Trance, for example, the little battle menu in the corner should show "TRANCE" in flashing letters at the top of the dialog box. Instead, it's just a rainbow-ish blur. Basically I just had to mess around with the settings by trial and error till I got that pixel perfect effect. Note that these images looked even better before we were forced to scale them down for Wikipedia's fair use policy on images.

As for my screenshots of Final Fantasy VIII (assuming you've seen them before we were forced to scale them down based on Wikipedia's fair use policy for images), I have the PC version of Final Fantasy VIII, which is graphically much smoother than the PS version. I also use PrntScrn for this.

If you have more questions just provide me with your e-mail address and I'll try to get back to you ASAP. --Tristam 03:39, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I gave your comment a thinking, but I thought it would be better if the infoboxes are closer to the descriptions. If we change it, that won't happen. Sir Crazyswordsman 00:16, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProjects

Hey, Tristam, how are you? I'm not actually the head of the FFWikiProject, as the project itself doesn't have a chosen leader. I have been around since it began over a year ago, and have watched it, as a contributor, grow since then. If you're interested in starting a project, I'd recommend reading the guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide. It talks about the need and practicallity of such projects, and what's required for their success. You should probably gather up some users who are knowledgable of the franchise and willing to work to get those articles in the shape they deserve. Unfortunately, I don't know diddley about Dragon Quest, and am unaware of anyone within WikiProject Computer and video games who is either. Maybe you can bring it up on the CVG and FF project talk pages. Who knows, perhaps we can eventually work towards a conglomerate Square Enix subproject of the CVG, comprising both FF and DQ. ~ Hibana 09:34, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Square Co.

Yeah, I saw the Alien 2 article. Very well done!

Unfortunately, I can't cite sources on an article which would absolutely demand them (this being high-profile and all); most of the data I have was recounted to me second-hand by a guy I know named duckroll, who's a regular on the NeoGAF forums as well as a contributor to the blog Namako Team. I would have added the data myself if I knew exactly where to point where references were concerned, hence why it ended up on the Talk Page instead. I'd hoped it'd give you a direction to go in.

I asked duckroll about his sources for early Square history about twenty minutes ago; he says he still has all of them. I'm trying to point him in your direction now; he can help you out further, hopefully! --E. Megas 05:47, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Why are people so interested in Squaresoft's dark history...

Hmmm, I dunno if the world is really ready for Squaresoft's history to be fully known. I mean what would people actually do if they realized that Squaresoft's origin was based in a softcore scifi H-game, some lame visual adventures and licensed anime mecha games?

Anyway here are some interesting infobites from the Squaresoft employee database that I've already pointed Megas to, and I believe he has shared:

- Sakaguchi was making games on the Apple 2 back in University, and Nasir was a really talented Apple 2 programmer that he got to know then.

- There was a novelist called Kenji Terada who wrote and planned the scenarios for the first 3 Final Fantasy games. He worked on the games because he knew the people at Square, but during the production of FF4 he broke off all relations with the company and the series. Apparently he felt that the developers of FF were amateurs who knew nothing about scenario writing, but started to develop feelings that they could do it too, so he felt that it was a big joke and left. Sounds like a douchbag honestly, because the scenarios for FF1-3 kinda sucked too! :D

- Taking over the scenario and game design direction was Takashi Tokita. He was a young man who joined Square in 1985, the same year as Kawazu. On Alien 2 and Highway Star he was in charge of the backgrounds. He did the game planning and graphics for Half-Boiled Hero on the Famicom (which would become on of his flagship series) and worked on the scenario (co-written with Kawazu) and graphic design/character design/effects/sprites of the original SaGa. After his work on FF4, he would go on to direct Live a Life and Half-Boiled Hero on the Super Famicom.

- Tokita has said that his reason for joining Square was that he saw the commercial for King's Knight and was impressed. He started out as a debugger for Tobidase Wars, and helped with some graphic work on FF1 (he wasn't on the main staff, just helping out with dotting Amano's drawings and so on).

Okay, that's all for today. There's a lot more but it's getting a little late. :D

- duckroll

  • Just to interject: 95% of this information seems to come from Critique of Games's ROAD OF SQUARE site which I pointed you to earlier. duckroll's translating this data himself, though you can probably ask for another translator if need be. --E. Megas 18:11, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Spoiler tags

Can you show me where on WP:CVG the consensus was reached about not using spoiler tags in the plot sections? Don't get me wrong, I hate spoiler tags, but I haven't found the discussion. Also the actual WP:CVG says to use the tags "where appropriate". Thanks. I've seen you do a lot of good work on pages that I frequent. Sraan 01:18, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Well, I found the discussion(s), but I didn't find any part where any sort of consensus was reached. But hey, I'm all for getting rid of them on the LOZ page. Sraan 01:46, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

No offense taken at all. I try hard to use out-of-universe text, but (as you know) its tough with game plots. I generally try to set up each paragraph with "According to..." or "As the game begins...", thinking that should set the stage for the whole paragraph, but I'll admit it isn't perfect. I think for a series as plot-driven as Zelda, though, its useful to the casual reader to have the full plot of the game instead of just the introduction, even on entries like LoZ with relatively little depth of plot. In this particular case, it gives context in trying to piece together where each game fits in the chronology. I will try to fix up some of the language so it doesn't repeat - I will admit I hadn't read the rest of the article in great detail when I replaced the plot text. Sraan 06:32, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
