[edit] Criticism

George Ouzounian, a prominent online satirist better known by the alias "Maddox", [1]criticised the show in a May 2005 article on his website, The Best Page in the Universe, stamping it hypocritical and patronising. As Ouzounian points out, the show promotes the awareness of frugality in the third world through the visiting of high-profile, wealthy Westerners. [1]

“
Then as if the crew felt that they weren't being condescending enough, they keep saying "I can't believe how far away we are, we're in the middle of nowhere." Yeah, I'm sure citizens of Bhutan and Honduras appreciate being told that they live "nowhere."

”

The show has also attracted criticism from the Cybercast News Service [2] for reasons similar to those outlined by Ouzounian. CNS claims Trippin's hosts overlook key socioeconomic issues exisiting in the countries visited, including Bhutan, and make such serious matters seem trivial in comparison to the supposed advantages of frugal living (e.g. actress Drew Barrymore was enthralled at Bhutan's lack of sanitary services). Quotes environmentalist Paul Driessen:

“
There's something perverse and immoral when multi-millionaire Hollywood celebrities head off on junkets in the jungle - and then preach to us lesser mortals about the joys of the simple life, and how we should protect the Earth, conserve energy, prevent global warming, and help the poorest people on our planet continue 'enjoying' their poverty, malnutrition and premature death.
