Trigate transistors

From the 1950s onward, flat/planar transistors have been used, where the gates lay flat across the substrate. Tri-gate transistors (also known as three dimensional transistors) use a single gate that is stacked on top of two vertical gates allowing for essentially three times the surface area for electrons to travel. Tri-gate transistors offer considerably lower leakage current and consume far less power than planar transistors used today.
Tri-gate transistors will also offer large energy saving and speed increases compared to current transistors. They allow for a 45 percent increase in switching speed and a 35 percent decrease in energy consumption. These new transistors should allow Moore's Law to be preserved well into the next decade.
