Tribunal Temple

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional world of The Elder Scrolls, The Tribunal Temple or New Temple is the dominant native religion of the Tamrielic province of Morrowind. Nearly all followers are Dunmer, meaning the religion's spread outside Morrowind is limited.

The Temple worships the three dunmer god-kings of Morrowind. The goddess Almalexia, the god-poet Vivec, and Sotha Sil The Tinkerer. The Temple have many branches all over the Province. The main branches can be found in the cities of Almalexia/Mournhold (capital of Morrowind), Narsis, Necrom, Vivec, Balmora, Ald'ruhn, Maar Gan, Gnisis and Molag Mar. Smaller branches can be found in various towns in the mainland. The god Vivec resides in his palace in Vivec, on the island of Vvardenfell, Sotha Sil resides in his Clockwork City, and Almalexia dwells in the Temple Brach in Mournhold. A player can join the Temple faction at any major branch in Morrowind.

[edit] Beliefs

The religion centers around the three God-Kings: Almalexia, Vivec and Sotha Sil. The three are worshipped together as the Tribunal or Triune ALMSIVI, but some of the most dedicated worshippers serve one of them nearly exclusively. Subservient to these and revered, rather than worshipped, are the 'Good Daedra', being Azura, Boethiah and Mephala and the ancestors. Most important among the ancestors are the Saints, divided into Greater and Lesser Saints. The God-Kings are also considered living saints. Listed with their especially favoured wards, the saints of the Temple are:

  • Greater Saints:
    • Almalexia the Warden - Healers and Teachers
    • Sotha Sil the Magus - Artificers and Wizards
    • Vivec the Poet - Artists and Rogues
    • Nerevar the Captain - Warriors and Statesmen
    • Veloth the Pilgrim - Outcasts and Seekers
  • Lesser Saints:
    • Felms the Bold - Butchers and Fishmongers
    • Llothis the Pious - Tailors and Dyers
    • Meris the Peacemaker - Farmers and Laborers
    • Roris the Martyr - Furnishers and Caravaners
    • Aralor the Penitent - Miners and Tanners
    • Delyn the Wise - Glassmakers and Potters
    • Olms the Just - Sailors, Chandlers and Clerks
    • Rilms the Barefooted - Pilgrims and Beggars
    • Seryn the Merciful - Brewers, Bakers and Distillers

Opposed to ALMSIVI and the saints are the 'Bad Daedra', the 'House of Troubles', with Malacath, Mehrunes Dagon, Molag Bal and Sheogorath each constituting one 'corner'. Worship of any of these is therefore a grave heresy in the Temple faith. The Temple also has a powerful foe in Dagoth Ur, who is also demonized in Temple doctrine, with the Tribunal being glorified as defenders against him through the upholding of the Ghostfence.

The temple's has its own force of soldier guards named Ordinators, they are a well trained group of Dunmer soldiers who guard both the holy city of Vivec and Ghostgate.
