I don't, yet, know the best way to put it but we are going to have to be careful with the stability criteria (from kinematics - e.g. RRR is always stable) and our observations of the Earth (RRR triple junctions can form in the early stage of rifting, but then one of the arms stops spreading, the Bay of Biscay is just one example).
