[edit] Etymology

I've only ever heard of the etymology which derives the word from Latin. I doubt an English word is its origin: I suppose the word is older than a hundred years or so, making a migration from England to the continent (it's the same in French and German, and some more languages apparently; see interwiki links) unlikely, especially since ecclesiastical architecture on the continet had a stronger impact on ecclesiastical architecture in Britain than the other way round.
