I wouldn't say that the attempted suppression united Old English and Gaels as Irish. Faith was the thing, and then, on the basis of faith, came the combined opposition to conformity. But it's too soon in the early 1600's to talk of a sense of shared nationality. Look: the discussion page is open!--shtove 20:59, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
