[edit] Gundam Wing

A proud man of German descent, Treize (French for Thirteen) is one of the most complex characters in the Gundam Wing series, but if there is one thing that's a constant about Treize Khushrenada, it's that he's a gentleman.

He welcomed the first challenge by Chang Wufei. In Wufei he saw a noble warrior, and the two fought fairly, but Treize was the better swordsman, and prevailed. Treize let Wufei go so that they might meet again.

Treize believes that noble war, combat between men, has its place in humanity. So, with the blessing of the Romefeller Foundation, he used the OZ subsidiary and controls "the Specials": a rebel organization within the United Earth Sphere military. He then used the Specials to stage a coup d'etat and wrest power from the United Earth Sphere Alliance. He despises what he sees as cowardly ways of war, such as the Mobile Dolls, and frequently finds ways to undermine the efforts of the extreme elements of Romefeller who would resort to those methods. But as Romefeller began to lean in the direction of unmanned combat, Treize found himself swamped under by the rest of Romefeller and was forced to step down and was sent to Romefeller's headquarter in Luxembourg in imprisonment.

But even trapped in Luxembourg, Treize continued to influence the war. Romefeller began to divide as a number of OZ soldiers sided with Treize and rebelled. During this time using the data from the Tallgeese and the Five Gundams he created the OZ-13MS Gundam Epyon, which was given to Heero Yuy after his Wing Gundam was damaged during Romefeller's attack on Luxembourg.

Finally, Romefeller and Earth began to re-unite under Relena's influence, but when his old friend Milliardo was leading the White Fang in a war against Earth, Treize seized the opportunity and once again took control, this time of the newly formed World Nation. Treize took up arms, piloting a rebuilt Tallgeese (the Tallgeese II) and realized his dream by leading the Earth's combined forces for one last battle. In this final battle Wufei challenged him to a rematch and during their battle, Treize died, apparently of his own volition by allowing the Beam Trident of Wufei's Gundam Altron to pierce the Tallgeese II's power core, resulting in its destruction.

[edit] Further Character Background

Treize during his lifetime has also fathered an illegitimate daughter Mariemaia Khushrenada. This was revealed when Mariemaia appeared in Gundam Wing - Endless Waltz when Mariemaia would launch an attack against the newly formed Earth Sphere Unified Nation, unaware that she was being manipulated by her Grandfather Dekim Barton.

How this came to be is revealed in Gundam Wing: Episode Zero, in Heero's story which is in After Colony 188, during this time Trieze was a simple soldier of the Specials group working under Oz leader General Catalonia. During the attack led by Quinze (The man who would later organize the White Fang rebel group) against the Earth Alliance on Colony X-18999 with stolen Alliance mobile suits, Treize was among the Alliance defense forces. When a younger Heero Yuy was going to destroy the Alliance command center with a rocket launcher, Trieze stepped into the line of fire and was injured to protect the soldiers there, which included a younger Lucrezia Noin (Who held the rank of Cadet back then). While recuperating in a hospital owned by the Barton Group it is how Treize met Dekim's daughter Leia Barton who was helping tend to his injuries. It was through Treize's illicit love affair with Leia that Mariemaia was born.

Episode Zero also reveals that during Relena Peacecraft's story in After Colony 191, Treize accompanied Zechs to help on a Special's mission to suppress a rebel faction as ordered by General Catalonia to assess the capabilities of their mobile suits and it is in this battle that Treize witnesses Zech's piloting skills for the first time. In After Colony 193 after General Catalonia's death, Treize was given the position as the leader of OZ. Finally in After Colony 194 during Wufei's story, after the battle ended in that story, through Lady Une, Treize became aware of a mobile suit sighted that was made of Gundanium. Treize chose not to tell this to the Earth Alliance feeling it is an enemy that he should face quoting that "One day the Justice of Space will descend on the Earth".

[edit] Character Influences

Unlike many other AU characters - and villains in particular - Treize is fairly unique, however there are recognizable influences from original Mobile Suit Gundam. His ability to defy the normal and shape history to his will is 'Char-esque' in many ways, but that - along with superior piloting skills - is the only real characteristic the two share, with Zechs being a more obvious and accepted allegoric reference to the beloved Char Aznable. Other influences include Gihren Zabi, though the degree of influence is debatable, and in many ways Treize is a much more multi-dimensional character.

Historic influences are also evident in Treize's character. The effect he has on war, those around him, and the course of history in general are reminiscent of Aristotle's great man theory, where one powerful personality shapes the course of an era. This is heightened by his Napoleonic dress, which links him to the great leader - a figure often cited as modern proof for the somewhat antiquated Great Man Theory. Napoleon is the most obvious historical leader he can be linked to, but there are countless others in both Western and Eastern historic traditions.

Psychological views of Treize are less often discussed. He fulfills several Jungian Archetypes, including the Übermensch, and to lesser extents the shadow, the hero, and the trickster. In Freudian theory, Treize is characteristic of the super ego, though the other two aspects of his unconscious are also active in the series.

[edit] Trivia

  • Like many of the other characters, Treize Khushrenada's first name is also a number. In this case, "treize" is how one would say the number thirteen (13) in French.
  • Conicidentally, the Gundam Epyon, which Treize built, has the designation OZ-13MS.
