From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Treaty of Whampoa was signed by Marie Melchior Joseph Théodore de Lagrené and Qiying on October 24, 1844 whereby China granted many privileges to the French Empire. These privileges the French demanded entailed the opening of five harbors, the acquisition of territories, and religious tolerance of Christianity in China.
