Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 is the 1990 follow-up album by the supergroup Traveling Wilburys to their 1988 debut smash Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. The appearance of the album was somewhat of a surprise due to original member Roy Orbison's death shortly after their first release.

Though the album is the second Wilburys record, the reason for its "Vol 3" title is uncertain. One explanation was that the title was a response to a well-known bootleg release of alternate material from their initial 1988 sessions entitled Vol. 2[citation needed]. More commonly, the title is explained as a reference to the various Wilburys' involvement in Tom Petty's 1989 album Full Moon Fever, making that album an unofficial "Vol. 2". Another possiblity relates to the ficticious musical Wilbury family created by these two albums. Both albums used art work stylized to look old. They also both use different names for the band members. This creates an aura of age and the missing Vol. 2 can be seen as a recording, by a different Wilbury band, that did not survive the passage of time. Yet it did exist and thus that fact is recognized by skipping from Vol.1 to Vol.3.

Because the dynamics within the band had shifted with Orbison's passing, the four remaining members all adopted new Wilbury pseudonyms: Spike (George Harrison), Clayton (Jeff Lynne), Muddy (Tom Petty) and Boo (Bob Dylan). With Harrison and Lynne producing again, the sessions were undertaken in the spring of 1990, with an additional track, a cover of "Nobody's Child" being set aside for a charity compilation album.

Released in October, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 was predictably less rapturously-received than its predecessor, yet still saw a fair measure of success, with both "She's My Baby" and "Wilbury Twist" becoming radio hits as the album reached #14 in the UK and #11 in the US where it went platinum.

Although there has since been speculation about further Wilbury releases, Harrison's 2001 death is considered to have ended any possible future projects with Harrison having been the unofficial leader of the group and with his estate owning the rights to both albums.

Tom Petty is known to have recently announced that both Traveling Wilburys releases will be remastered and reissued in late 2005 through EMI, who have the licensing rights to all of Harrison's solo albums. As of December 2006, these remasters have yet to materialize.

Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3 was dedicated in memory of Lefty Wilbury (Roy Orbison).
