[edit] Driving in Jersey

Despite its small size, Jersey has over 350 linear miles (563 kms) of paved road on which to explore this beautiful Island.

You can bring your own car on one of the ferries (see Getting Here) or rent a vehicle from one of the many car rental outlets.

In Jersey, we drive on the left hand side. Take precautions – many of the roads are quite narrow and twist and turn between the fields and farms. The maximum speed limit throughout the entire Island is 40 mph/64 kms per hour.

Visitors wishing to drive must possess a Certificate of Insurance or an International Green Card, a valid Driving Licence or International Driving Permit (UK International Driving Permits are not valid). Photocopies are not acceptable. A nationality plate must be displayed on the back of your vehicle.

Speed Limits

Jersey roads and country lanes are narrow and winding so please drive with care and observe the 40mph/64km all island maximum speed limit. In addition to the above general speed limit, you should also be aware of slower limits on certain stretches of road, such as 20/30mph/32/48km in built up areas and 15mph/24km in Green Lanes.

These limits are clearly shown by the appropriate signs.

Mobile Phones

It is an offence to hold a mobile phone whilst driving a moving vehicle.

Seatbelts

Drivers and adult front seat passengers must wear seat belts. Children must wear seat belts or a suitable child/infant restraint, in both front and rear seats. Your duty in case of accidents

If involved in an accident stop.

You must: Contact the Police who will advise the correct course of action. Failure to do so is a criminal offence.

Call the police.

• If damage is caused to any unattended vehicle or property. • Even if your vehicle is damaged and is the only one involved or, • If any injury is caused to any person or animal.

In any other case you must, if required, exchange personal details together with details of insurance cover.

Drink and driving

Jersey has similar provisions to the UK, with regards to fixed alcohol limits and roadside breath testing. The penalties in Jersey are severe, up to £2,000 fine or 6 months in prison for the first offence plus unlimited disqualification of driving licence. It is an offence to drive whilst under the influence of drugs. Parking - Where can I buy the paycards?

Payment by paycards is required for parking wherever the paycard symbol is displayed. Paycards can be purchased from Jersey Tourism, post offices, garages, shops and anywhere displaying the “Paycards sold here” sign, but not in the car parks themselves apart from Sand Street.

[edit] Parking in Jersey

Single yellow lines indicate that parking is prohibited and is liable to a fine.

Paycards are used to pay for parking throughout Jersey with the exception of the harbour, airport and waterfront car parks where a pay upon exit scheme is operated.

They have to be used:

Monday to Saturday (Inclusive)

08.00 to 17.00 hours*

  • Parking on Gorey Pier is charged until 22:00.

You must use them whenever you park ‘on-street’ in the RED and YELLOW zones and in all car parks where you see this sign:

The charge for parking ‘on-street’ is 1 unit per stay. You are allowed to stay 20 minutes in the YELLOW zone and 60 minutes in the RED zone. There is currently one Residents' Parking Scheme in St. Helier and is around the Stopford Road area. When parking around here please look carefully at the signs to identify if general parking is permitted.

In car parks the charge is variable - see the notice board at the entrance of each car park for details of the tariff. You can buy paycards wherever you see a sign similar to the one above displayed in shops, garages or from your hire-car company, car ferry or Jersey Tourism. They are available in three denominations - 1 unit, 2 units and 4 units. These are available as individual units or in books of ten. You must have paycards with you when you park so be prepared - buy some as soon as you can.

Paycards – Instructions for use

Upon arrival at the parking place:

  • Decide how long you intend to stay. Remember ‘on-street’ parking and some car parks are limited to short-stay.
  • Calculate the cost from the notice board (‘on-street’ parking is 1 unit per visit).
  • Scratch off five panels - DAY, DATE, MONTH, HOUR, MINUTES (to next five minutes) to show your time of arrival.

When using more than one single unit paycard, scratch off each one identically, ie: if staying three hours scratch off three cards.

Display the validated paycards by placing them face-up on the dashboard so that all the details on each card displayed can be clearly seen from outside the vehicle. You will also find full instructions on the reverse of each paycard.

Warning – Failure to display the correct value of a paycard properly validated may result in a penalty charge.

In some roads on the outskirts of St Helier and in the harbours, parking is free but controlled by parking discs (time wheels) – obtainable from the Town Hall for a small charge.
