[edit] History
The second generation A-series trains started service when the Perth rail system needed more railcars due to more demand.
[edit] Differences to first generation
The sole difference is that the second generation trains are quieter and has some additional features, like a LED screen which displays messages such as Doors Closing.
At 2006, Transperth Trains has begun replacing the electronic destination displays to a brighter LED and a new destination panel has been installed to provide a more detailed information for passengers, as well as the recorded public announcements, which they are either in female or male voice.
[edit] Future
Note the following information is not currently official (leaked information)
The Transperth A Series Trains are expected to be rejuvenated and somewhat "rebuilt" to operate faster and more efficiently. The unofficial plans, state that the A Series will have faster service speed (130km/h), and will have modifications to the exterior. The plan states that the A's will all be upgraded and will have the following:
- CCTV Cameras (in domes), 4 per car (interior) and 2 outside (looking outward near doors (for drivers))
- 35% improvement in performance (acceleration and better braking)
- New Doors and allight buttons (which are B Series design)
- More and better lighting
- Destination Displays. With CCR/LCD Display
- Basic Horn upgrade (louder/repositioned)
- Coupling system upgraded (newer design, thus of B Series trains, Fully Automatic)
- Train Dampening system (reduce noice by up to 40%)
- Replacement of windows
- Repaint/Clean (newer livery, green)
- New Carpet
This is set to begin in 2008/2010 as the A Sets can perform and look more presentable to the transperth network, providing faster travell and better services. Hence, some lines will not allow the full potential to be reached in accordance to maximum speeds of 130km/h, however the increased acceleration, and, better brakes and stopping distances is set to make the journey on any line quicker. This will be negotiated with EDi Rail/Bombardier.1
[edit] Parts
The second generation A-series run on every line in 2 or 4 car sets. The Second Generation A-series is the second generation of the first series to operate on the electric rail system in Perth. They contain 2 parts - A drivers carriage (pictured), and B drivers carriage.
[edit] Timetable and Storage
The second generation A-series serves 3 of four lines in conjunction with the first generation. It formally shared the Joondalup line with the B-series, where at train stations on the Joondalup line, every second train would be a different one to the one that preceded it, and the one that would succeed it. However, A-Series trains are only seen a few times a day on the Joondalup Line, now.
