The tramway network in Grenoble

Grenoble's tram network is 32 km long, and comprises three lines: lines A, B and C. Line A was opened in 1987, Line B in 1990, and Line C entered into service on May 20th, 2006. A fourth line, Line D, is expected to open at the beginning of 2007. There once existed a network of tramways in Grenoble between 1894 and 1952, which makes it one of the rare French cities to have its tramway network operational in the beginning of the 20th century. Grenoble became the second French city to reintroduce the tramway, after Nantes.

[edit] Future extensions

Line B will be extended from Cité International to the Polygone Scientifique early in 2009. A new line, Line E, will replace bus line number 3, and is projected to be complete by 2011. In 2013, Line A will be extended both from Fontaine to Sassenage, and from Échirolles to Pont-de-Claix. Extensions to line D, probably from Saint-Martin-d'Hères to Alpexpo or towards Meylan are also planned.

A "tram-train" linking Moirans to the centre of Grenoble is projected but is suspended for the moment. Also a link from Grenoble to Vizille via Le Pont-de-Claix, Jarrie and Champ-sur-Drac; the ligne should be opened in 2015.
