Tralfamadorian
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tralfamadorians are green toilet plunger-shaped aliens from the planet Tralfamadore that are found throughout Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s literature, including Slaughterhouse Five and The Sirens of Titan. These aliens are able to "see" the fourth dimension, which is the ability to see time occurring and recurring simultaneously and continually. Since they have this ability, they find humanity's idea of free will hilarious, because everything is already determined. There is no linear idea of time, they are able to see an objects past, present, and future; which has been described as a caterpillar, with the back being the youth and the front being death. Speaking of death, Tralfamadorians don't view death as a sad event, rather they view the dead as in an unfortunate state at the time, because death is not final to them. When death comes up in conversation they use the phrase, "so it goes" to attribute someone being "dead". In Slaughterhouse 5 Billy eventually adapts this terminology to deal with his stress of death and warfare in WWII and specifically the fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany. Also Tralfamadorians capture Billy Pilgrim, the main character, to display him in a zoo for the public. Eventually they abduct Montana Wildhack, a celebrity, to become a companion to Billy in hopes of their mating. The use of Billy's spastic traveling through time and traveling to Tralfamadore, increases rapidly towards his confrontation with WWII and specifically Dresden.
