- 1874 – East Broad Top narrow gauge railroad in Pennsylvania operates its first revenue trains.
- 1961 – Maritime, Coal Railway and Power Company, in Nova Scotia, ceases operations.
- 1983 – In preparation for a sale of the Alaska Railroad's assets to the state of Alaska, the United States Railway Association sets the railroad's fair market value at $22.3 million.
- 1988 – Boston and Maine Railroad's former Connecticut River Railroad line is transferred to Amtrak for the restoration of Montrealer service, which became Amtrak's Vermonter (pictured).
