- 1887 – Cotton Belt Railroad predecessor Paragould and Buffalo Island Railway, in Arkansas, is incorporated.
- 1933 – London, Midland and Scottish Railway 4-6-0 Royal Scot number 6152 (of the LMS Royal Scot Class locomotives) departs the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago, bound for Vancouver, British Columbia.
- 1962 – Colorado and Southern Railroad 2-8-0 number 641 pulls the last steam locomotive-operated regular daily service revenue train on a standard gauge railroad in the United States when it pulls a train from Leadville to Climax, Colorado.
- 1987 – Soo Line Railroad sells 2,002 miles (3,222 km) of track to the newly formed Wisconsin Central Ltd. The first train of the new Wisconsin Central is operated from Stevens Point to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
