• 1872 – George Westinghouse (pictured) receives a patent for the Westinghouse air brake.
• 1948 – H.P.M. Beames, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Western Railway 1920-1922, dies (b. 1875).
• 1956 – The last steam locomotive purchased new by Southern Pacific Railroad, cab forward class AC-12 4-8-8-2 number 4294, is retired from revenue service.^[1]
