- 1876 – Nigel Gresley, Chief mechanical engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway 1923–1941, is born (d. 1941).
- 1944 – Richard Deeley, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Midland Railway 1909-1923, dies (b. 1855).
- 1964 – United States President Lyndon B. Johnson presides over the groundbreaking ceremonies for Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART; pictured).
- 1998 – The government of Panama relinquishes control of the Panama Railway to the Panama Canal Railway Company, a subsidiary of Kansas City Southern.
