- 1831 – The John Bull, the oldest surviving operable steam locomotive, departs Liverpool aboard the steamship Allegheny bound for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- 1887 – The second Tay Rail Bridge across the Firth of Tay in Scotland opens.
- 1986 – Raymond Loewy (pictured), industrial designer who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad designing the shape of equipment such as the GG1, dies (b. 1893).
- 2004 – Canadian National Railway completes its purchase of BC Rail.
