- 1843 – William Cornelius Van Horne (pictured), who oversaw the major construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and who became the youngest superintendent of the Illinois Central Railroad, is born (d. 1915).
- 1881 – The Seney Syndicate met at Seney's New York bank and organized the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company (which would later become the Nickel Plate Road).
- 1995 – Canadian National Railway sells the former Central Vermont Railway lines in New York and Vermont to RailTex, forming the basis for the New England Central Railroad.
- 2004 – The first freight train travels the entire north-south transcontinental railroad in Australia between Adelaide, South Australia, and Darwin, Northern Territory.
