1833 – The Western Railroad of Massachusetts is chartered to build a railroad between Worcester, Massachusetts, and the New York state line.
1854 – Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve (pictured) near Altoona, Pennsylvania, opens for railroad traffic.
1865 – The Chicago and North Western Railway and Galena and Chicago Union Railroad merge.
2005 – Construction begins on the first light rail commuter line in Phoenix, Arizona; it is scheduled to open in December 2008.
