- 1857 – George S. Griggs is awarded U.S. Patent 18,883 for a steam locomotive fire arch (pictured) developed by Matthew Baird.
- 1940 – The local tracks on New York City Subway's IND Sixth Avenue Line are opened.
- 1954 – Ernest Lemon, Chief Mechanical Engineer (1931-1932) and later Vice President of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, dies (b. 1884).
- 2002 – All first-class cars on the TGV become non-smoking cars.
