- 1816 – Thomas Crampton, English steam locomotive builder, is born.
- 1929 – The Ghan (pictured) begins operation in Australia under its current name.
- 1986 – A spectacular train accident at Paris' Gare de l'Est kills 1 and injures 56. This disaster happened only a few weeks after another Gare de Lyon train accident on June 27; SNCF's president Philippe Rouvillois was forced to resign.
