- 1928 – Chauncey Depew (pictured), president of New York Central Railroad, dies (b. 1834).
- 1941 – Nigel Gresley, Chief mechanical engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway 1923-1941, dies (b. 1876).
- 1968 – The Ulster Transport Authority (UTA), responsible for closing most of the northern part of the Irish railway system, is dissolved. Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) (formed as Ulster Transport Railways) takes over operation of railways in Northern Ireland.
- 1969 – The Buckfastleigh, Totnes and South Devon Railway, in England, reopens as a preserved steam railway.
