- 1833 – Richard Trevithick, English inventor and steam locomotive builder, dies (b. 1771).
- 1877 – James P. Kirkwood, designer of Starrucca Viaduct, dies (b. 1807).
- 1893 – The John Bull, the world's oldest surviving operable steam locomotive, arrives in Chicago, Illinois, for the World's Columbian Exposition after traveling under its own power from Jersey City, New Jersey.
- 2004 – In the Ryongchon disaster, a flammable cargo explodes at the railway station in the town of Ryongchŏn, North Korea, near the border with China; the explosion occurs only a few hours after North Korean leader Kim Jong-il passed through the station en route back to the capital from a secret meeting in China.
