- 1856 – The first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River opens between Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa.[1]
- 1913 – Richard Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board 1961-1965, is born (d. 1985).
- 1917 – Colorado Midland declares bankruptcy for the second time, but the company will not be able to recover from this bankruptcy.
- 2005 – At least 17 people are killed and 78 injured in a collision between a passenger train and stationary goods train in western India.
