  • 1842 – The French government enacts the Loi relative à l'établissement des grandes lignes de chemins de fer which establishes the plan for French railroads' placement in a star pattern centered around Paris.
  • 1857 – The Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée railway company (PLM) is formed from the amalgamation of the Chemin de fer de Lyon à la Méditerranée (LM) and the Chemin de fer de Paris à Lyon (PL) companies.
  • 1859Stuart R. Knott, president of Kansas City Southern Railway 1900-1905, is born (d. 1943).
