Toy Story 3 is a computer-animated film, a sequel to Toy Story and Toy Story 2 that was to be produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation through Circle 7 Animation with a release planned for 2008. This version of the film stopped production in January 2006. In February 2006, however, Pixar Animation Studios, the creators of the series (and now a Disney-owned subsidiary), took over production. Currently, there is no exact release date announced.

In July 2006, Tim Allen confirmed that he and Tom Hanks will be reprising their roles of Buzz Lightyear and Woody respectively,[1] and that John Lasseter, director of the first two Toy Story films, will be directing again.[2] Recently it was discovered that Lasseter has completely scrapped the old Disney script for the movie and started creating one that fits in better with the other two.

[edit] History

The film was to have been produced without Pixar's involvement, as part of Disney's production deal with the company at that time, Disney had the rights to produce some sequels to Pixar features without their involvement. This scenario upset many, including John Ratzenberger, a longtime regular of Pixar-created Disney films and the voice of Hamm the pig, who refused to do the movie unless Pixar was involved in the production. In addition, Jim Varney, the voice of Slinky Dog in Toy Story 1 and 2, died in 2000, and Joe Ranft, the voice of Wheezy the Penguin in the 2nd Toy Story and Lenny the Binoculars in Toy Story 1 and 2, died in 2005. This meant that other voice actors would have to be brought in or Slinky Dog, Wheezy the Penguin, and Lenny the Binoculars would all have to be written out of the script.

In January 2006, Disney announced a deal to acquire Pixar; almost immediately after the announcement, Pixar co-founder and Disney's newly appointed Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter halted production of the film. According to a message posted in a forum at Animation Nation, Lasseter and Pixar President Edwin Catmull "announced to Feature Animation employees that the Toy Story 3 production will end effectively. They said that sequels should only be made if there is a really great story that demands it, and should be the domain of those who created the original film."[3] An AP article confirmed the news:

One immediate sign of Lasseter's influence is that plans for Disney to make the long rumored sequel Toy Story 3 on its own have been scrapped. If the film is made, it will be done by Lasseter and the other creators of the original film, the companies said.[4]

Reuters, through unnamed sources, later reported that Disney was in the process of transferring the production to Pixar. This news was then confirmed by Disney CEO Robert Iger when Disney announced its 2006 first-quarter earnings in February 2006.[5][6] In May 2006, Disney announced that the film was in full production. The script is currently being rewritten.

In addition, on the Disney College Program website, a video shows the Disney company history and current events. During this video, it shows Buzz Lightyear and Woody with the title Toy Story 3. The completed toy footage is taken from Toy Story 2.[7] This would confirm on the movie's existence and possibly mean an upcoming release in the near future.

In an interview with movie website chud.com, John Lasseter was asked if Toy Story 3 was going to be a theatrical release or direct-to-video, to which he said, "We’re not talking about Toy Story 3 yet. Sorry!"[8]

At the Comic-Con 2006 convention, Tim Allen confirmed that he and Tom Hanks will reprise their roles as Buzz and Woody for the film. It is expected that, should Toy Story 3 indeed be Pixar's next project for 2008, its trailer will debut with Ratatouille in June 2007, continuing a Pixar tradition.

Disney's plot idea consisted of a recall of Buzz Lightyear toys, which includes Andy's, driving a group of toys to venture to Taiwan to rescue Buzz, who has been malfunctioning. After Disney's acquisition of Pixar, and after the project was temporarily scrapped, John Lasseter announced a plan for an improved storyline.
