The Town of Port Hedland is a Local Government Area of Western Australia for the town and district of Port Hedland (20°18′S 118°36′E; post code: 6721) in the Pilbara Region. It has a population of 13,020 (ABS 2001)[1], of which only a few hundred live outside the settlement boundaries. The council maintains 171 km of sealed and 380 km of unsealed roads.[2]

In 1894, Pilbara Road Board (renamed Port Hedland Road Board in 1904) was gazetted. On 1 July 1961, it became a Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act, and became a Town on 18 March 1989.[3]
