Towarzysz ("Companion," plural: towarzysze) was a cavalry officer in the Polish army, from the 16th century. Later this word assumed the same meaning as Russian communist 'comrade'.

In Polish army, the towarzysz was a noble who served in the Army. His pay was relative to the number of men he brought with him in his "retinue" (poczet). He armed, provisioned and commanded his men (singular: pocztowy). In the light cavalry, a Companion mostly fought alone without a retinue. The rank of Towarzysz husarski (Hussar Companion) was equivalent to that of an Ensign (Standard-bearer) in armies of other countries.
