Toronto Welsh RFC

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TORONTO WELSH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB were founded in 1961,in Ontario Canada.

The founding members were Peter Hughes, Don Farquarson and Ron Jones. The latter became the first team captain of the club. Originally, it was intended that only Welsh players would play for the club, but this never materialized. The first games were played at High Park.

One of the best players to come through the ranks was Dave Lougheed. He represented Canada at international level, at rugby union.

The club has strong links with many teams from Wales, including Pontypridd RFC, Maesteg RFC and Kidwelly RFC.

In 2003, they combined with the University of Toronto to form a new team, the Toronto Dragons RFC.

(However, the University of Toronto now again has a separate team, which is part of the Varsity Blues.)
