Toronto Special
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Toronto Special is a Toronto tabloid newsmagazine that focuses on Canadian celebrity, politics, entertaiment, current trends and fads, and stories that you won't read anywhere else. First published in 2002, the Toronto Special is quickly becoming one of the most popular free publications in Toronto and even has subscribers as far away as Australia and Hong Kong.
The Toronto Special was first available at York Univeristy's Glendon College and was published as an insert in the college paper, Pro Tem. The demand for the publication was so high that the original founders were forced to publish in downtown Toronto, where it has become a staple next to other free papers like Now Magazine and Eye Weekly.
The Special boasts that it has the highest readership with the 23-26 year old females living and working in downtown Toronto. Among the many female subscribers to the Special, there are many more that pick it up in some of the many establishments in Toronto; including public libraries, bars, restaurants, coffee shops and novelty stores like Good Catch in Parkdale. It is printed 6-8 times a year and has a circulation of over 15,000 readers. It also has the lowest ad rates in the city.
The Special also houses famed Toronto celebrity columnist Clammy J. Byner, hard-hitting ex-Navy Seal Izzy Stern, mentalist Mysterion, Cam Gordon's Off The Radar and sexpert Polly Roxxhoff. As well as provides regular features like School Time Confidential, Fad Forecast and Screwed.
Roger Abbott of the Royal Canadian Air Farce stated, "the Special is a fresh, new voice in Canada." While others like Scott Thompson of the Kids in the Hall has said, "the Special truly delivers all the real news."
