[edit] Comprehensive List of Airlines is a Bad Idea?

Hey, I must be clueless and not understand the nature of Wikipedia. I added the page because Wikipedia has a comprehensive list of airlines across the world. This airline was not on it, and I decided that a comprehensive list should maybe be... comprehensive. I'm wrong? Once I added to the list, I took the time and did some minimal research. I have no interest in the airline myself and had never heard of it before last night. Just trying to be conscientious and add to the body of knowledge that Wikipedia is supposed to be. The vast MAJORITY of the world's airlines are on that list (and most are insignificant). Indeed, I'd agree that it's a good goal to have a comprehensive list of the world's scheduled airlines and transportation infrastructure. In this case, Tortug Air looks to be one of the only airlines with domestic service in Haiti -- a country with horrible ground transportation and no significant-sized air carriers. If Wikipedia doesn't want a comprehensive list of transportation infrastructure, then by all means, delete Tortug Air and about 2/3 of the airlines on that list. Also, delete the descriptions of every minor highway in North America, as only the interstates and a few others are worthy. Tortug Air appears to be part of Haiti's critical infrastructure. "Googling" it is not research by itself. Goeverywhere 01:14, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

  • Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. I think a valid argument could be made that a good chunk of stuff which people have spent time creating for Wikipedia adds no real value (ie: a catalog of every Star Trek character ever). The Guidelines for Notable Corporations apply to this company and it appears that it doesn't meet the criteria. I don't know anything about the company either. However, as the article stands, it does not establish the notability of the company. I'll remove the prod tag and add a tag to say "this article needs attention," and see if it can be expanded up.
    • I completely agree with you; the article does nothing to establish the notability of the company. Tortug Air is not notable as a company, nor was it included because it is a company. It was included in Wikipedia because it appears to be an important piece of Haiti's transportation infrastructure, much like a good highway is important to infrastructure and economic development. I hope someone will have the time and the knowledge to expand the article. I would disagree with the implied contention that a comprehensive listing of Haiti's airline infrastructure adds no real value. Haiti is suffocating (in part) under the weight of its lack of significant infrastructure, per the Wikipedia article. Therefore, a scheduled airline in Haiti is notable far in excess of its actual global significance. The fact that it's also a company would be irrelevant in that case. Compared to the other Haitian airlines that were mentioned, the omission of Tortug Air seems like a glaring oversight. I'd vote to keep the article and complete the comprehensive airline list. [edit] IATA/ICAO Codes

I haven't been able to find the IATA or ICAO codes for this airline. Maybe someone else can add that.
