[edit] Features
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is the first game in the Tony Hawk franchise that allowed players to play in one large streaming level. In the September 2005 edition of Game Informer Magazine, a map was shown displaying THAW's Los Angeles with an insert of an overhead view of the Boston stage from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 for comparison. The Boston level appeared to be about three quarters the size of one THAW area, with the obvious exceptions of the "Vans Skatepark" and "Casino" areas. In addition, this map also revealed the locations in the game:
- Oil rig (Level originally appeared excusively for Xbox in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 as a bonus level)
- Santa Monica
- Beverly Hills
- Skate Ranch
- Hollywood
- Downtown Los Angeles
- Vans Skatepark
- East Los Angeles
- Casino (Originally appeared as Las Vegas in Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix)
Also, the Classic Mode, which allows you to complete a series of goals in certain levels within a two-minute time limit, has returned, with the following levels:
- Downtown Minneapolis from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
- Santa Cruz from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
- Mall from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
- Chicago from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
- Kyoto from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
- The Ruins from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
- Atlanta from Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix (Collector's Edition)
- Marseilles from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (Collector's Edition)
[edit] Story Mode
THAW is set in Los Angeles. You play as a normal skater who moves to LA to make it big in skating. When you get off of your bus in LA however, you get jumped by some locals. They take all of your stuff, which you eventually need to take back. The only things you have left are clothes on your back and your skateboard. You then meet a girl named Mindy who helps you get started on your journey. Mindy later introduces you to Iggy. Iggy runs the Skate Ranch, which is pretty much a barren plot of land. It becomes your goal to find pieces to put in the Skate Ranch, and to make the Skate Ranch one of the best skate spots in LA.

[edit] Trivia
- Some characters' names are references to real people, such as Ben Whofleck (Ben Affleck) and Ashlee Sampson (Ashlee Simpson).
- In the Oil Rig area, Mega has a pet shark named Fonzi, in reference to the term "jumping the shark."
- Some of the pro skaters stances are incorrect, such as Tony Alva (Regular), Andrew Reynolds (Regular), Tony Trujillo (Regular), and Ryan Sheckler (Regular).
- Skate Club and Project Wasteland are references to Fight Club and Project Mayhem in the book and movie Fight Club.
- The soundtrack cover pays homage to The Clash's album cover for London Calling, which in turn is an homage to a self-titled Elvis Presley album. The American Wasteland Soundtrack cover is a young man smashing a skateboard against the ground, instead of a guitar in the London Calling cover.
- Mat Hoffman wore the same clothes he wore in Dares a Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide episode.
- The programmers of the game kept their "No Loading Screens" promise by utilizing city to city tunnels that acted as loaders. While going through these tunnels you will hit some lag spots and the game will lag a little. That is the game loading the next area.
- It is the first Tony Hawk game in which you do not have a choice in Gender during Story Mode. You can only play as a male, due to the ending scene, however in other modes you may play as a Female.
- In the Metro Rail passageway between Downtown and Hollywood, and the parking garage passageway between Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, the game screen will suddenly turn into a slow-motion security camera. These cameras may be a cover-up for the game having to load between areas of the city.
- When you create a graphic in the game, you will notice the skater flipping the board in his hands. This is a cover-up for the graphics menu loading. Therefore, the game creators can keep the promise of "No Loading Screens." You can also see a star in the upper right hand corner.
- In Santa Monica if you look around closely you will find a graffiti tag saying "Santa Monica" in side a cross this is a reference to the dog town and z-boy graffiti which can be seen in the documentry featuring Tony Alva (Dogtown and Z-Boys) also there is another tag saying "locals only" this is another reference to the same documentry there is also a film based on this documentry Lords of Dogtown
- The man who blows up the downtown entrance is a reference to the movie Falling Down starring Michael Douglas, in which he does the same thing.
