Tono-Bungay is a novel by H. G. Wells published in 1909. The title is the name of a fictitious "tonic" patent medicine with active ingredients consisting of a high proportion of alcohol and a stimulant harmful to the kidneys. The book describes the rise of a business empire based on marketing this product, and is evocative of the Edwardian period.
